Director of Risk Management

Aiken Regional Medical Centers, located in Aiken, South Carolina, is a 273-bed acute care facility providing top quality and safe healthcare to the residents of Aiken and surrounding communities since 1917. Director of Risk Management is r esponsible for planning and directing the ARMC Risk Management program from an operational perspective.

Duties:

  • Knowledge of basic components of risk management, including potentially compensable events, risk investigation, reporting and claims management.
  • Analyzes incident reports and Utilizes the MIDAS database for incident tracking, trending and reporting. Ensures timely completion, submission and accurate leveling of incidents.
  • Communicates appropriately and maintains a good working relationship with physicians, staff, directors, and administrative team. Serves as a resource for Administration, facility staff, and medical staff by articulating the UHS Risk Management Program.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Develops comprehensive, measurable, corrective action plan as a follow – up to safety surveys and communicate actions
  • to staff.
  • Appropriately identifies and forwards reports of incidents (RDEs) and behavior issues to the appropriate medical staff/peer review committee for corrective actions as necessary.
  • Investigates serious incidents, in conjunction, with UHS Corporate Guidelines.
  • Evaluates risk in at least 2 high risk areas in collaboration with facility leadership by conducting risk assessment, reporting
  • results, and making recommendations.
  • Participates and responds to any corporate initiative related to risk reduction (i.e., future HRU projects, emergent recall
  • situations).
  • Communicates in a timely manner any significant occurrence by accurately completing Adverse Event Reports (AER), and
  • submitting to corporate within 15 business days.
  • Collaborates with UHS corporate, defense counsel, and UHS claim managers.
  • Manages claims and litigation of alleged medical malpractice and general liability issues.
  • Addresses UHS Risk Alerts / Solutions and The Joint Commission Sentinel Alerts by review of current facility compliance and over – seeing Patient Safety Council / recommendation through action plan tracked.
  • Develops and institutes policy and procedure related to claims processing and notification such as preservation (i.e.,
  • saving) of physical evidence and critical document handling
  • Communicates with UHS Corporate Risk, hospital CEO, Regional Leadership on pending trials, mediation, or arbitration and
  • anticipated roles and extent of involvement
  • Develops corrective action related to potential claims modifiers / issues.
  • Chairs Patient Safety Committee / Council monthly in conjunction with CEO and submits required follow – up of Patient Safety Council reports to corporate.
  • Identifies undesirable patterns and trends in performance and facilitate the development of action plans to resolve issues
  • in a timely manner.
  • Reviews and updates annually the Risk Management / Patient Safety Plan including evaluation and design of annual goals
  • and objectives.
  • Educates and communicates on issues of risk prevention and topics derived from facility specific issues.
  • Leads or actively participates in Root Cause Analysis ensuring that risk reduction strategies are completed in a timely manner.
  • Evaluates risk components of the Environment of Care (EOC) program including Facility Equipment Management Plan,
  • Emergency Operations Plan, Hazard Surveillance, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Attends key facility meetings such as, but not limited to, PI, MEC, Policy and Procedure, P&T and EOC.
  • Serves
  • Serves as the content expert for all Risk Management information given in orientation assuring mandatory UHS topics are covered.
  • Participates in regulatory survey.
  • Organizes and maintains the facility’s compliance policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates resources to assure proper implementation and ongoing effectiveness of the Compliance Program at the facility, including staff education.
  • Assures that the facility’s compliance program effectively prevents and/or detects violations of law, regulations, UHS or facility policies, the Code of Conduct and the Compliance Manual.
  • Provides assistance, as necessary, with investigations and implementation of corrective action plans relative to the Compliance Program.
  • Maintain facility records relating to the Compliance Program as set forth in the UHS Compliance Policies.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Requirements:          

Education: College degree required.

Experience: 5 years hospital experience; Knowledge of the operations of the healthcare industry and delivery system.  Knowledge of local, state and federal legislation. Ability to organize and manage; Knowledge of the principles and practices of risk management. Basic computer knowledge.  Strong written and verbal skills. Knowledge of the principles and practices of risk management; Ability to organize and manage.

License or Registration Requirements: CPHRM preferred. Certification in Six Sigma principles is preferred.
