Position Description

The Campus Public Safety Officer is a vital member of our campus Public Safety team and serves as the first responder for the university under the direction of the Public Safety Supervisor or their designee. This dynamic, active role requires vigilance, quick decision-making, and engagement with the campus community. The Public Safety Officer is a uniformed, non-commissioned officer position that actively patrols campus grounds, provides essential medical and security aid, coordinates emergency services, documents critical incidents, and ensures the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role is deeply focused on community service and mental health support, as well as providing assistance to the greater campus community.

The Campus Public Safety Officer maintains a shift schedule that includes coverage during campus closures and holidays. Officers work collaboratively in teams of 5-6 personnel, including a supervisor and dispatcher. Our department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Officers are assigned to one of our teams. Teams rotate between day and night shifts every six months to ensure balanced coverage.

Campus Safety & Security Operations (60%)

  • Conduct proactive patrols to monitor security, prevent incidents, and ensure campus safety.
  • Respond to non-emergency requests, provide campus escorts, and assist with general security concerns.
  • Operate the communications center, including monitoring safety systems, CCTV, dispatching responders, and keeping records.
  • Uphold Seattle University policies while maintaining a customer-service-focused approach.

Emergency Response & Incident Management (30%)

  • Serve as the first responder to emergencies, including medical incidents, accidents, and security threats.
  • Provide immediate medical assistance and coordinate emergency services (EMS, fire, law enforcement).
  • Document and maintain accurate records of incidents, ensuring compliance with legal and institutional policies.

Community Engagement & Collaboration (10%)

  • Offer support and guidance to students and staff, focusing on mental health and well-being.
  • Collaborate with other Seattle University departments to enhance campus safety and services.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1 year in a customer service role.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, walking, and running significant distances; restrain and take into custody another person; receive university-sponsored self-defense training; lift or otherwise move up to the weight of a person; climb stairs; occasionally work at heights above 30 feet.
  • Must be able to perform duties in confined spaces and varying outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written form, including use of two-way radio, telephone, and in face-to-face contacts.
  • Must be able to give or take direction in stressful or emergency situations.
  • Strong writing skills
  • Must be at least 21 years of age in order to legally enter a licensed or unlicensed drinking establishment to enforce rules and regulations.
  • A valid Washington State driver's license is required. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required within three months of hire (training is provided).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4 year bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Salary Range: $48,500 - $49,800
